The casino gambling fact is that the house always has an edge. There are exceptions if you stick to multiple variants of video poker. But all table games have a home advantage.
When my dad Lenny Frome first discovered his strategy for video poker, he called the expected value of the entire game the term “payback”. Basically, it is the opposite of the house advantage. For example, a game of Jacks or Better has a return of around 99.6 percent and a house advantage (or edge) of 0.4 percent.
This concept is absolutely necessary for comparing video poker machines as almost all video poker machines operate on the same maximum denominations and coins on the pencetpoker site. Thus, the total amount wagered is the same from one machine to the next. If you are playing the maximum coins, which should be, you are putting in five coins regardless of whether you are playing Jacks or Better, Deuces Wild or Double Bonus. Unfortunately, this is not true when you are trying to compare table games.
When it comes to table games, my dad uses the term payback to refer to the amount of money a player can expect to return to him divided by the total amount he has staked, assuming he’s using an Expert Strategy. So, if a game has a 99 percent return, you can expect to lose 1 percent of the total amount you bet over time. If you are a $ 5 player this doesn’t mean you will lose an average of five cents per hand. There are very few games where your starting bet is your only bet.
So, to really know how much you can expect to lose in a game, you have to take the average bet into account. Below is a table with many common games and approximate average bets and returns.
